In 1783, German-born British astronomer William Herschel published 'On the Proper Motion of the Sun and Solar System,' demonstrating that the Sun moves through space. Herschel analyzed the proper motions of stars and determined the Sun travels toward a point in the constellation Hercules, which he called the 'solar apex.' His calculated direction was within 10 degrees of the currently accepted position. This discovery revealed that the Sun, previously considered stationary within the heliocentric model, moves through space, changing astronomical understanding of solar system motion.
