Between 532-537 AD, Byzantine emperor Justinian I commissioned the construction of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. Designed by architects Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, it featured an innovative dome and was the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years. The church was dedicated on December 27, 537, and marked the beginning of the Byzantine Empire's golden age.
