On May 8, 1919, three U.S. Navy Curtiss NC flying boats (NC-1, NC-3, and NC-4) departed Naval Air Station Rockaway on Long Island, New York, attempting to be the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean. After several stops and setbacks, only the NC-4, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Albert Cushing Read, completed the journey, landing in Lisbon, Portugal on May 27, 1919, becoming the first aircraft to successfully cross the Atlantic.
