First Hot Air Balloon Flight

On November 21, 1783, the first untethered human flight in a hot air balloon took place in Paris, France. Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis d'Arlandes flew in a hot air balloon designed by the Montgolfier brothers, traveling about 5.5 miles in 25 minutes. This historic achievement was preceded by the Montgolfiers' first public demonstration of their balloon in Annonay on June 4, 1783, marking the beginning of human aviation.
