The Fenian Brotherhood, Irish-American Civil War veterans, launched raids into British North America in 1866, including attacks at Fort Erie and the Battle of Ridgeway on June 2. Their goal was to seize Canadian territory to pressure Britain into granting Irish independence. These raids helped build support for Canadian Confederation in 1867.
