Through the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte in 911, King Charles III (the Simple) of West Francia granted territory along the lower Seine to the Viking leader Rollo, establishing what would become the Duchy of Normandy. In exchange, Rollo pledged fealty to the king and agreed to defend the region from other Viking raiders, while later converting to Christianity.
