The power loom was designed by Edmund Cartwright in 1784 and patented in 1785. Cartwright, an English clergyman and inventor, was inspired after visiting Richard Arkwright's cotton spinning mills. His invention mechanized the weaving process, revolutionizing the textile industry by dramatically increasing production and lowering costs. Though initially crude, Cartwright continued improving the design, establishing a factory in Doncaster to manufacture and refine his invention.
