The Doushantuo Formation in China preserves remarkable phosphatized microfossils dating to 600-550 million years ago. These exquisitely preserved microscopic fossils include what may be animal embryos, multicellular algae, and possibly some of the earliest evidence of animal life on Earth. The microfossils show cellular-level detail, allowing scientists to study the embryonic development of early organisms. The Doushantuo fossils appeared shortly after the Marinoan glaciation ended and provide an important window into the evolution of complex life before the Ediacaran biota became widespread.
