On November 8, 2016, Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president of the United States. Trump won 304 electoral votes to Clinton's 227, carrying 30 states despite losing the popular vote by approximately 2.8 million ballots. He flipped traditionally Democratic states Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin by narrow margins. Trump became the fifth president elected without a popular vote plurality and the first with no prior government or military service.
