On August 10, 1945, U.S. Army colonels Dean Rusk and Charles Bonesteel determined the 38th parallel as the dividing line between Soviet and American occupation zones in Korea following World War II. Using a National Geographic map, they chose this line to include Seoul in the American zone. This temporary division later solidified into separate North and South Korean states.
