Around 5260 BCE, inhabitants of a Neolithic lakeside settlement near present-day Dispilio, Greece created a wooden tablet bearing incised symbols. Discovered in 1993 and radiocarbon dated to approximately 7,300 years ago, the tablet contains markings that some researchers interpret as proto-writing. Debate continues about whether these marks constitute a writing system or representational symbols. The tablet predates Mesopotamian cuneiform. The Dispilio settlement, built on artificial islands in Lake Kastoria, also yielded pottery, bone flutes, and figurines.
