In 1674, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch businessman and scientist, became the first person to observe and document microorganisms using his handcrafted microscopes. He reported his findings of what he called "animalcules" (tiny animals) in letters to the Royal Society of London, ushering in a new field of study that would eventually become microbiology.
