Leif Erikson, Norse explorer and son of Erik the Red, died in Greenland sometime between 1019 and 1025 CE. He is last mentioned alive in written records around 1019; his son Thorkel succeeded him as chieftain of the Greenland settlement by 1025. Around 1000 CE, Erikson had led an expedition to a land he called Vinland, identified by archaeologists with the Norse ruins at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada. The Saga of the Greenlanders and the Saga of Erik the Red provide the primary accounts of his voyages.
