Counter-Strike was initially created as a Half-Life mod by Minh "Gooseman" Le and Jess "Cliffe" Cliffe, with the first beta released in June 1999. Valve Software acquired the rights to the game and released it as a retail product on November 9, 2000, establishing one of the most influential multiplayer tactical first-person shooter games that would define the genre for years to come.
