On June 2, 1953, Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London by Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury. The ceremony was the first British coronation broadcast on television, reaching an estimated 27 million viewers in Britain. The BBC deployed over 750 staff providing commentary in 41 languages. Elizabeth had acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI.
