Confucius developed a philosophical system emphasizing virtue cultivation, ritual propriety, and ordered human relationships during China's Spring and Autumn period (c. 551-479 BCE). Born in Lu state, he taught concepts including ren (benevolence), li (ritual propriety), and filial piety to students across Chinese states. His disciples compiled his teachings in the Analects after his death. Within two centuries, the Han dynasty adopted Confucianism as official ideology and established it as the basis for China's civil service examination system, which operated for over 2,000 years. His teachings influenced family structures, law, and political philosophy across China, Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.
