Charles Lyell Publishes Principles of Geology (First Volume)

January 1830 · 19th Century
GeologyEvolution

In January 1830, Scottish geologist Charles Lyell published the first volume of "Principles of Geology," which was followed by two more volumes in 1832 and 1833. The work established the theory of uniformitarianism, proposing that Earth's geological features were formed by the same gradual processes still observable today, requiring vast periods of time. This groundbreaking work directly influenced Charles Darwin and fundamentally changed scientific understanding of Earth's history.
