The Butterfield Overland Mail Company operated from September 1858 to March 1861 under a $600,000 annual contract with the U.S. Postal Department. It provided the first regular transcontinental mail and passenger service from St. Louis, Missouri and Memphis, Tennessee to San Francisco, California. The route, covering about 2,800 miles, was known as the "Oxbow Route" and took approximately 25 days to traverse. It was designated a National Historic Trail in 2023.
