On January 29, 2026, Burkina Faso's Council of Ministers approved a decree dissolving all political parties and transferring their assets to the state. The Transitional Legislative Assembly adopted implementing legislation on February 9, 2026, eliminating more than 100 registered parties. Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in September 2022, had suspended party activities following his coup and declared in April 2025 that Burkina Faso was "no longer in a democracy." Human Rights Watch, the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations condemned the dissolution.
