Bimbisara, who ascended the throne at age 15 around 544 BCE, transformed Magadha into one of ancient India's most significant kingdoms. He established the Haryanka dynasty with its capital at Rajagriha (modern Rajgir), and expanded the kingdom by conquering Anga, gaining access to important trade routes to the east. His strategic matrimonial alliances with Kosala, Vaishali, and other kingdoms secured valuable territories and political stability. Beyond military and diplomatic achievements, Bimbisara implemented an effective administrative system, supported diverse religious traditions, and patronized both Buddhism and Jainism during their formative periods.
