Bimbisara Establishes Magadha as a Major Power

c. 544 BCE · Ancient World
PoliticsEconomics

Bimbisara of the Haryanka dynasty acceded to the Magadha throne around 544 BCE, traditionally given as age 15. Ruling from Rajagriha (modern Rajgir), he annexed the neighboring kingdom of Anga in eastern Bihar, gaining control of trade corridors along the lower Ganges. Diplomatic marriages with Kosala, Vaishali, and Madra extended Magadha's reach without further military campaigns. Bimbisara patronized both Gautama Buddha and Mahavira during the formative period of Buddhism and Jainism. Buddhist and Jain texts record that his son Ajatashatru imprisoned and killed him around 492 BCE to seize the throne.
