Ancient Greek civilization emerged from the Greek Dark Ages (c. 1100-800 BCE) around the 8th century BCE with the rise of city-states, development of the Greek alphabet, and composition of Homeric epics. This period marked the beginning of Classical Greek culture that would significantly influence Western civilization through contributions in philosophy, literature, art, politics, and science.
