On February 12, 1912, Empress Dowager Longyu signed the Imperial Edict of Abdication on behalf of the six-year-old Emperor Puyi, officially ending the Qing dynasty and over 2,000 years of imperial rule in China. This followed the Xinhai Revolution of 1911 and led to the establishment of the Republic of China.
